On June 27, 2022, Akron, Ohio police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Jayland Walker. What followed was a high speed chase where police allege that Mr. Walker fired a shot from his car. The chase ended when Mr. Walker abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot. The incident ended when Mr. Walker was shot 60+ times by 8 police officers who were in pursuit of him. The officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the Ohio Attorney General’s Office conducts an investigation. From that investigation, the findings could be sent to a State grand jury to decide if some or all of the officers will face State criminal charges. Second, the U.S. Department of Justice could open their own criminal investigation to determine if the officers should be charged with violating Mr. Walker’s civil rights. Third, the officers could face administrative proceedings to determine if they will be suspended or even terminated from employment. Finally, the Walker family could pursue a civil action seeking monetary damages from the officers, the police department and the City of Akron.
