On Monday October 3, the U.S. Supreme Court opened its new term facing a host of challenges. The Court is expected to still feel public backlash against its decision this past summer overturning Roe v. Wade, and abolishing the constitutional right to an abortion. Since that decision, some states have put in place laws which criminalize abortions. As a result of the abortion decision, the Court has increased individual security details for each justice through the U.S. Marshall’s Service, after Justice Kavanaugh faced a threat at his Maryland home. Finally, the court will have a new make up with Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson joining the court. The current make up of the court has five solid conservative justices, three liberal justices, and Chief Justice John Roberts, who, despite conservative leanings, is considered a “swing vote” by many experts.
